A 45-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was approached by three people who were trying to break into his car, but instead stabbed him. The attack happened at about 2:17AM in the area of Birtley town.

Northumbria Police believe that one of the offenders may have been injured in the disturbance.

They are also appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
